Laminated Densified Wood Composites

InsuLam® Densified Wood Laminates for Electrical Insulation and Structural Strength

InsuLam® laminated densified woods combine high mechanical strength and excellent electrical properties within a single engineered material system. For over seven decades, CK Composites has supplied the structural insulation components used throughout critical electrical infrastructure, transportation, and defense systems.

Tough. Stable. Moisture-Resistant.

Grain‑Aligned Laminated Densified Wood for Maximized Flexural Strength

InsuLam® is produced from European beech veneers impregnated with electrical-grade phenolic resin and densified under several thousand tons of pressure. InsuLam® is ideal for applications when structural loads and electrical insulation requirements must be satisfied simultaneously.

With various grain orientations available, tangential orientation is especially well-suited for transformer pressure rings. InsuLam® aligns wood fibers tangentially with the direction of stress in the finished component, maximizing usable flexural strength where it matters most. The result is a resin-composite material that combines the mechanical toughness of wood with the stability and moisture resistance of a thermoset resin system.

Key Performance

Tunable density in P60 and P72 configurations. Consistent mechanical and electrical properties across temperature extremes. Moisture and termite resistant. Machinable to exact specifications.

North American Manufacturer

CK Composites is the only manufacturer in North America capable of producing densified laminate components through a fully integrated process, from veneer preparation through finished machining, within a single facility.

Laminated Densified Wood Components

InsuLam® components are specified wherever high compressive loads, dimensional stability, and electrical insulation must coexist in a long-lifecycle application.

Flexible Performance

Insulator Systems That Carry Both Structural Load and Voltage

InsuLam® is frequently selected when structural loads and electrical insulation requirements must be satisfied simultaneously. Its unique combination of strength, toughness, dimensional stability, and dielectric performance makes it well suited for large transformer assemblies, rail systems, and other demanding applications.

Two Specific Grades:
Insulam LH and Insulam EH

Insulam EH™ Fully Impregnated Laminated Densified Wood
Insulam EH™ is a fully impregnated densified wood product that offers high mechanical strength, high dielectric strength and dimensional stability.  The product is easily machined and widely used in Electric Power equipment and cryogenic applications.

Insulam LH™ Non Impregnated Laminated Densified Wood (IEC 61061)
Insulam LH™ is non-impregnated product which is manufactured to comply with DIN 7707 and IEC 61061. This grade is used primarily by OEMs in oil- insulated power transformers as pressure rings and for blocking/supports. Pressure Rings are manufactured in 2 densities LH77P72(IEC TYPE T4R), and LH77P60(IEC type T2R).

Integrated densified wood manufacturing

Process Capabilities & Quality Discipline

Production Scale & Flexibility

InsuLam® supports a wide range of component sizes and configurations, from precision-machined fasteners and blocking to large transformer pressure rings and railcar shoe beams. Flexible manufacturing capabilities support both custom applications and long-term OEM production programs.

Repeatability & Control

Controlled, consistent, and carefully managed manufacturing processes help deliver consistent mechanical properties, dimensional accuracy, and electrical performance across production runs.

Testing & Traceability

Electrical, mechanical, dimensional, and environmental verification supports customer qualification requirements and long-term production confidence. Material and production traceability are maintained throughout the manufacturing process.

U.S.‑based Manufacturing & Supply Chain

Unlike manufacturers that import pressed laminate materials and perform only final machining, CK Composites controls the complete manufacturing process—from veneer preparation and resin treatment through lamination, densification, and finished machining.

Representative Applications

Laminated densified wood applications across power, transportation, LNG cryogenic storage, and other high‑load, high‑voltage industrial systems.

Power Transformers

Top and bottom pressure rings for dry-type and liquid-filled transformers — critical for maintaining coil position during short-circuit events. InsuLam®’s tangential grain orientation delivers higher flexural strength than cross-laminated materials, enabling thinner rings, smaller core windows, less oil, and reduced losses.
